SCAMP #434 Build - May Progress Report


More 'lots of little jobs' culminating with planking the hull which seems to me like a big turning point in the building process. 

Making some deviations from the typical build which included:
  • Glassed the floors and footwell as added protection.
  • Glassed inner surface of two forward most garboard plank for added strength as it feels like these areas will be the 'first on the scene' of any bumps or collisions.
  • Planning to add 15" wide stern lazarette between the seats with rectangular hatch
  • Adding small hatch to access watertight area between bulkhead seven and stern and sealed the bulkhead.
  • Added hatches to inside of bulkhead four to access and vent under seat compartments.
  • Decided to keep seat tops hatch free for cleaner lines and sitting comfort.  This is a big decision but upon reflection I think the storage will not be necessary for my style of sailing especially when the other available storage in taken into consideration.  Hatches can always be added later.
  • Trying the oil based Tremclad rust paint for locker surfaces.  Other builders have been very happy with this product.


Finishing the ballast tank and adding 6 mm doubler to the footwell floor; drain hardware installed

Engine mount doubler cut out and attached

Cut outs to fill and seal the aft bulkheads

Filling in bulkhead seven hole to create small, separate, water tight compartment

Port garboard strake going on

Copper wire stitches and clamps - not pretty but getting job done

Garboard strake stitched and glued with small regular fillet tabs

After wire and clamps removed tabs hold strake in place for fillets and glass tape

Holes in bulkhead four cut and hatches dry fitted

Hatch holes cut and latches dry fitted in forward floor

Thought I would give this a try for this interior of forward lockers

Two coats of Tremclad light grey - very pleased with results
